Book review: Back on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber

As I write this, the winds from hurricane Joaquin have started and I know that they will only get worse as the day goes by. The closest point will be at 8 pm tonight as per last update from the weather service. The only good thing is that it has not been predicted to be a direct hit like Gonzalo was. That was scary. Right now I wish I was Leo Jr, he has no idea what is about to happen.

There is little else to do than wait so I decided to finish the book I was reading: “Back on Blossom Street” by Debbie Macomber and review it here on the blog.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was easy to read and it made me feel sad and happy all at the same time.

The story centres around a yarn store where a group of women meet for a knitting class once a week. They each are making a prayer shawl. The book has a pattern for a shawl at the beginning. The book focuses on Lydia(the yarn store owner), Alix(who is having a wedding) and Colette(who has run away from her previous boss and is keeping her pregnancy a secret).

My favourite character in the book is Alix because is a strong woman who has overcome so much. Her parents were abusive and she ended up in foster homes and doing drugs. With the help of Jordan(who becomes her husband) she turns her life around. The knitting classes also helped her make new friends and get a new career as a baker. Her relationship with Jordan’s grandmother is just beautiful. Jordan’s grandmother dies on their wedding day but Alix handles it so well and they continue with their wedding. I would not have handled it the way she did, I would have been a mess.

Lydia’s story sounds like a story that a lot of people can relate to one way or the other. She has had cancer and can not have children anymore. Her niece is car jacked and her mother has Alzheimer’s. Lydia’s story made me think about my mother and how at some point I will not always have her. Of course it is not guaranteed that I will outlive her but it made me pause that at some point I might have to say my mom will not live that much longer. It scared me. It is things that we do not like to think about but they are facts of life.

Colette’s story was enjoyable but it was kind of predictable. I could not believe that Christian was a criminal. I was happy they ended up together in the end.

Time permitting, I will knit the shawl in the book.

Oh, the book has quotations from knitting pattern authors, my favourite was this one
