It is now safe to say that summer is over and I could not be happier. I like summer but I hate the heat and I sweat like a pig. All my plants died from the heat except for the basil and chives. I was so heart broken I did not even take a picture.
About three weeks ago I started growing my garden again and decided to add some arugula/rocket. I have tried growing spinach before and failed. The seeds just would not germinate and the seedling would die. I am not sure what I did wrong there but will try one more time.
Arugula is easy to grow and that means I will not have to fork out $8 for a box of arugula. Arugula can be used in salads or a salad itself. I have also sautéed it in a bit of olive oil and minced garlic.
On the packet it says it is an early summer crop but I think it depends on where you are, not all summers are the same. Here are the steps to grow your arugula
- Sow your seeds in about 1/4 inch of the soil. You start with seeds. I use a flower pot because I do not have a proper garden but if you have a garden, you can sow your seeds where you have other plants already growing like cabbage
- Place your pot where it will receive full sunshine
- Water you plants regularly
- In about 20 days you arugula will be ready for harvest and you can use a scissors to cut the leaves you want. New leaves will start to grow. You could also use your hands for harvesting and thinning the plants and sow some more seeds in between the other plants.
- Do not allow your arugula to grow flowers it will become very bitter.
