How to clean sneakers with maize/corn meal

In high school part of our sports uniform were white tennis shoes. I have no idea whose idea it was, but to give teenagers white tennis shoes and expect them to stay white does not sound very wise. White tennis shoes look great if you are playing tennis at Wimbledon and not in a field with red clay. For the most part our sports shoes would look white-ish until the first five minutes of wearing them or someone steps on you.

There is a way to make sure your tennis shoes or sneakers stay white. You use maize/corn meal. The maize meal seems to get the dirt out better than just using soap. My mother used to do this on my father’s farmer shoes, I guess she still does.

This method will only work if you are drying your sneakers outside. If you are using a dryer it will not work.

Wash your sneakers preferably by hand.

Smear maize/corn meal all over your shoes. Leave them to dry outside. Check your weather listings, you need to do this on a dry and sunny day.

The maize/corn meal will change colour to the colour of the dirt in your shoes.

Brush the maize/corn meal off your shoes until none is left. Your shoes are ready to be worn.
