Chocolate Maheu

Before there were energy drinks, we had maheu. Maheu is a food and drink kind of deal. I have a confession to make. I have never bought or drunk factory made maheu.

Thing is it is one of those I can make myself at home so I don’t see why I should buy them. The only reason why I would want to buy maheu is that the kind at the shop come in different flavours. Which I can not even tell you what they are.

What I do know though is that they have to add some (probably a lot) preservatives to them. Maheu is a fermented drink, which when you make at home, will become sour and eventually undrinkable after a few days. Plus I am not at all convinced they use actual fruit for flavouring but some chemical flavourings. I know a lot of people love their store-bought maheu for many various reasons. I just have not been convinced enough to try.

This is how I decided to make my own chocolate maheu.

To make maheu you either use leftover sadza or you can make porridge and then add some water and flour/chimera. Leave for a day or two to ferment and enjoy. This time I made some chocolate maize meal porridge, I added some cocoa powder for the chocolate flavour.

I had some of the chocolate porridge; topped with peanut butter, banana and coconut flakes.YUM!!!

I added some water and left it to ferment for 2 days. How much time you need will depend on the temperature in your home.

Chocolate Maheu

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup maize meal
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Sugar to your taste

Instructions

  1. Boil 2 cups of water in a saucepan.
  2. Blend the maize meal and cocoa powder with a 1/4 cup of water.
  3. Add the blended maize meal to the simmering water and stir until it starts bubbling. Depending on the type of maize meal you use it may be too thick or too runny. If it is too thick add a little bit of water and whisk. If it is too thin blend some more maize meal and add to the saucepan.
  4. Cover pot and let it bubble for 15 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Add 2-3 cups water and stir in the flour. Put in a container where you will allow to ferment. Ferment for 2 - 3 days.
  6. Enjoy as is or add some sugar tour taste.
