Slowcooked Mabhonzo(Beef Bones)

Last week on my grocery run, which I get to do all by myself these days (YAY! for school!), I asked the butcher if he had beef bones. He proceeds to show me beef ribs. No, I tell him, I want beef bones like what you would use for soup. He goes to the back and comes back with a big bone, so I asked him to cut it for me into small pieces. He cuts them for me and packs them for me.

They were $FREE,99!

That would never happen in Zimbabwe, because we all eat beef bones.  Supply and demand issues. Certainly more more preferred to stewing beef. Bones add flavour to the whole dish and keep the meat moist.

Over the weekend I made my beef bones stew in a crockpot. I like that with a crockpot I do not have to worry about scotching the whole thing as when I use the stovepot. I just dumped the beef bones into the crockpot together with tomatoes, onion, herbs and tomato sauce and let it cook on low for 6 hours. Then I added the kale.

There is nothing fancy or cute about this meal. Forks and knives are unnecessary. You have to completely comfortable with whoever you are eating this meal with. Certainly not when you are trying to impress your new boyfriend, haha. Unless you are cool like that!

It is messy but so at good and the cheapest meal I have had in Bermuda by far!
