Sautéed Rape (Canola) Greens

If you follow me on social media, you will already know that I container garden. This year I also added rape or canola greens.

Sauteed Rape GreensI have only seen these greens eaten in Zimbabwe, other countries grow them for the seeds to make canola oil. It is not my absolute favourite but I miss the food I grew up eating. The taste is similar to kale, perhaps it is milder. When cooked, rape greens wilt a lot  like spinach. In Zimbabwe people like to pair them with beef bone stew or offals. I prefer to have them in peanut butter sauce using this recipe I have shared before.

Ingredients

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 small onion

1 crushed garlic clove

Crushed red pepper flakes

Bunch of rape greens

Instructions

Cut the greens into ribbons.

Sauteed Rape GreensSauté onion, garlic and red pepper flakes in the olive oil.

Sauteed Rape GreensAdd the cut greens and sauté until wilted.Sauteed Rape Greens
Sauteed Rape GreensServe hot as a side dish or on a sandwich.

You can also find these greens in some parts of the American South. I grew up eating them, but after I moved away from that region, they have been hard to find. They’re so delicious, though.

We eat a lot of these in southern Italy… fabulous sauteed with homemade sausage!

Thank you for helping me find out the English (generic) names of these Vegetables. I just discovered I can get this and Kale+ Mustard Greens here in the American South❤️❤️❤️❤️

Lucky you, there is no rape here. It is not my favourite but like it with dovi.

Try blanching them in hot water and freeze.

Thank you for the recipe. my son had planted rape, daikon radishes along with our turnips in our garden for fall, as a new planting method they are trying out. I mentioned picking turnip greens to saute and he said that deer always eat the radish greens first, then the rape before they touch the turnip greens. So tonight I am trying all three. We will see. If I like them we have several acres in foot plots for deer planted in this blend.
